Smøla Municipality invests in digital supervision with Varda Care

Smøla Municipality

Smøla Municipality has chosen digital supervision from us as a central part of its investment in welfare technology within health and care services. Varda Care is now being used in the municipality’s new nursing home, including associated assisted living facilities.

The goal is to strengthen patient safety, provide healthcare personnel with improved oversight, and increase security for both patients and their relatives. As part of the project, a total of 40 sensors have been successfully implemented.

Digital supervision that alerts in case of deviations

Our service is used to monitor the patient’s health status throughout the day and night, without disturbing sleep or compromising privacy. The sensor is placed under the mattress in the bed and registers, among other things, absence and presence, as well as sleep patterns.
Information from the sensor is sent to the patient alert system Hepro Respons, which provides healthcare personnel with continuous oversight of the unit. The service sends alarms in case of deviations and gives healthcare personnel the opportunity to provide the patient with support and care when the need arises.

We do not view this as a measure to reduce staff, but as a tool to provide better oversight and increased safety.

Digital supervision with a focus on patient safety and privacy

Smøla Municipality has clear objectives for the use of digital supervision. According to Municipal Director Lena Sletta, the service provides healthcare personnel with more concrete insights and enables a better tailored service for each individual patient.
At the same time, privacy protection has been a decisive factor:
“It was crucial for us to choose a solution that safeguards privacy in a responsible way and only provides the information necessary to ensure safe and appropriate healthcare.”

This balance between patient safety and privacy is a key reason why Varda Care was chosen.

Proper training ensures safe use

In close collaboration with our partner Hepro, we supported Smøla Municipality through implementation, training, and follow-up to ensure a successful and valuable rollout of the service. We conducted the training at Smøla Health Care Center with around 20 employees present.

“It is important for employees to receive good training in the service. This minimizes errors and misunderstandings during the start-up phase and increases confidence and understanding of the service,”
says our Sales Manager, Lydia Bekkevold.

Through the training, employees received information on correct use of the service’s functions, how to install the sensor mat in the bed, and how to use the Varda Care app.

Digital supervision provides:

  • continuous overview of patients throughout the night, without unnecessary disturbances
  • automatic alarms in case of absence or presence
  • extended insight into patients’ daily and sleep patterns

Positive experiences with Varda Care in the municipal sector

Before full-scale implementation, Smøla Municipality tested the Varda Care service over several months on a smaller scale. The results were consistently positive.

Healthcare personnel reported that the solution was easy to install and intuitive to use, while significantly improving oversight—particularly during night shifts.
The municipality highlights several key benefits of digital supervision with Varda Care:

  • improved sleep quality and increased quality of life for patients
  • faster response to deviations
  • increased security for relatives
  • less stress and better overview for employees
  • earlier detection of changes in health condition
